Requirements
Browser, JavaScript, and three formats that behave differently.
verstag needs no installation. What it does need is a current browser with JavaScript switched on — and for three formats it is worth knowing that they behave differently from the rest.
The signed-in product speaks German, so its messages are quoted in German below, with the English rendering in italics.
JavaScript must be switched on
Without JavaScript verstag does not work. Not reduced, but not at all: the sign-in form cannot even be submitted, and the pages stay empty.
One exception: the export of the audit trail — in the settings under „Audit“ — is an ordinary file download. It runs with the browser's own progress indicator, can be cancelled and resumed, and works without JavaScript.
Browser
What verstag needs is a browser that handles current web standards and still receives security updates — which in practice means a current Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
verstag names no fixed minimum version. What counts is in the other two sections of this page: JavaScript switched on, and — for video — what the browser can play itself.
Three formats that behave differently
HEIC, TIFF and video. Two of the three quirks are shared with further formats; where they are, it is said on the spot.
HEIC: Chrome often reports no file type at all
The iPhone photo format regularly arrives in the browser with no type attached:
the file is there, but the browser does not say what it is. verstag then falls
back on the file extension — .heic or .heif is enough for the file to be
accepted. Where the browser does name a type, that type applies.
A HEIC file with no extension is refused. If you rename such files when downloading them out of another system, keep the extension on them.
The same holds for HEIF and, in some browser builds, for .tif.
TIFF: can be verified, cannot be uploaded
The quick check accepts TIFF; the upload into the library (in the sidebar „Library“) refuses it. verstag can read Content Credentials out of a TIFF file, but cannot produce an output in that format.
Through „In Library speichern“ (Save to library) beneath the verification result it still reaches the library — as a verification-only asset, carrying a result but no editor.
The same holds for WebP, AVIF, HEIC and GIF.
Video: the preview depends on the browser
Whether a video plays in the editor is decided by the browser. Where it cannot play the format, a notice appears in place of the picture:

This browser cannot play this video format. Label placement still works — anchor, size and rotation can be set, and the video derivative can be saved.
What is missing in that case is only dragging with the mouse. Anchor, size and rotation are still set through the controls; the label is burnt in later against the file itself.
